Pontiff A Thriller eBook Richard Bowker

I wanted to like it, but the main character, a priest, continues to have issues with his sexuality during the whole book and had a liaison with a young policewoman early in the book and the sexual tension after the liaison tended to overpower the storyline to the point that the outcome was pre-ordained (pardon the pun). I knew exactly how the non-sexual ending would manifest itself as soon as I read who was going to be at John XXIV's Mass. I won't tell here the outcome. The religiosity of the book is marginal at best and almost unbelievable at the least, although some of the drama written in the book concerning the Vatican Bank have a basis of truth considering the problems the Bank had in the past. The book is average, the storyline is average, the character development is good to great, the suspense is good. So I gave it an average rating.

Pontiff A Thriller eBook Richard Bowker Reviews

In this book Richard Bowker does a great job of exploring the Catholic hierarchy. There is a plot to assasinate the Pope, and it is up to Fr. Joe Hurley to find a way to stop it. Along the way, he meets a girl who entices him to leave the priesthood. Together, however, they solve the mystery, and save the Pontiff. There are some stories within the story that are intriguing. This is a well-written book that is a pleasure to read. I recommend it!!
Exciting all the way through.
This book was a wild ride inside of papal politics and how God works in spite of or maybe with the abuses and misuses of power within and without the walls of the Vatican. Could not help but find relevancies in todays world.
Vatican could always be an arena for a thriller. What makes it good is not the love story or not even the places but the mixture of events and the necessity sometime to follow your believes even when they are against the official opinion.
...even if this is not dedicated to be a story about God. Richard Bowker knows how to build a story, with characters both realistic and deep. Of course the background (the Vatican) is somewhat a too familiar place, but the intricacies and mischieves of higher prelates in the Curia are not too much imposed, and the deep questions brought upon a smart priest are well described. Perhaps not as original as the Senator but a good piece of entertainment.
